Adventurer | 19 June 2009 | par : Audrey
- “Eric Loizeau,, you’re a sailor and mountaineer, how do you define cold?”
“For me there are two sorts of cold: the damp cold at sea, and the dry cold of the mountains.
Damp cold is the worst. I find -5°C at sea harder to cope with than -20°C in the mountains. The damp plays a big role.Personally, I prefer cold weather to hot. I find it easier to counter. For example, when you sail over the equator it’s very hot. Once you’ve taken the last of your clothes off, there’s nothing more you can do… That said, cold can be hazardous”
- “What is your greatest or most incredible story about the cold?”
“When I climbed Everest, I got frostbite in several fingers on my right hand.
What was surprising was that until I saw the frostbite when I took off my gloves at the summit, I hadn’t noticed. But I’d been using my hand, for my ice axe. It can happen so fast. You need to be careful in the cold. At altitude, the cold is extreme, and you have a different perception of yourself.” more…
